Clarkson holds Roller Coaster Camp

Posted July 25, 2012

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Clarkson University is proving that math and science can be fun for middle and high school students.

This week, professors and students are holding a Roller Coaster Camp. Students are learning how a roller coaster is designed and they'll be creating their own.

The camp involves a variety of hands on experiments and number crunching.

The students will also be traveling to The Great Escape amusement park where they'll be able to speak with a roller coaster engineer.

"We feel like it's an opportunity to show them that math and science is cool. You can actually have these great exciting careers when you study these topics and then to speak with someone in person. I think really drives it home," said program director Katie Fowler.

The students will be presenting their designs in a showcase at the end of the week.

The camp is part of a yearlong program which is funded through the New York State Department of Education's Science and Technology Entry Program.
