College of Osteopathic
Medicine’s STEP Program Visits the Cold Spring Harbor
Laboratory and DNA Learning Center
November 19, 2013 @ Cold Spring
Harbor Laboratory and DNA Learning Center
This Clinical Core Lab Tour and ‘Jumping Gene’,
Forensic DNA Profiling and Human Mitochondrial Sequencing
introduced students to the opportunity to conduct several
experiments with his/her own DNA.
DNA samples were collected from cells that are normally
present in saliva. The students swished their mouth with a
saline solution and spit the sample into a cup. The DNA samples
that were extracted from those cells were amplified by a process
called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and examined for specific
DNA markers.
It was explained that there is a consensus that human DNA
experiments should not be conducted without the willing consent
of the donor; who understands the purpose for which their
DNA is being used. Thus, the students were required to supply
written parental consent authorizing their child’s participation
in the experiments.
The DNA Learning Center is the world’s first science
center devoted entirely to genetics education and is an important
center for molecular genetics research. Their goal is to offer
all families access to genetic information they need to make
informed health care choices.
