September 27, 2013 - October 27, 2012 was Teen Money
101 day at Albany Medical College STEP. Students and parents
attended an interactive adventure in personal financial literacy
with the author of Teen Money 101, Stacia Morris. This very
fun seminar from 10:00AM to 2:00PM was held on one day only,
but the impact lasted over the course of the spring semester.
The Financial Literacy seminar spawned the Entrepreneurship
Project which entailed students working in groups to design
innovative products for their peers in the marketplace. Four
groups presented their products and services at a competition
on April 24, 2013, to four entrepreneurs from the community
who served as judges. The products illustrated the students’
science knowledge and showcased their academic interests, research
and their public speaking and presentation skills. The winners
were O’Shayne Davis, Sufyan Ahmed and Ashley Yalaju–
all seniors, who designed the Pyroplate– an appliance that
uses only solar energy to produce heat for cooking meals while
camping in the outdoors without threatening the environment.
Their presentation was both business pitch and physics lesson
which included detailed charts and CAD drawings of the appliance
and its mechanism. The Entrepreneurship Project will be repeated
this year with more advanced workshops focusing on design, innovation,
marketing and finance.
