LEGO Robotics Competition at Adelphi University

Adelphi University, April 20, 2013 & April 27, 2013

Adelphi University developed a Lego Robotics program and competition targeted to all Nassau County middle and high schools as well as to allstudents enrolled in the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) in the Long Island Region. The purpose of the competition is to improve and encourage STEM education and interest with our local high school and middle school students. It will be a low cost alternative where districts will have an opportunity to participate in a high quality event. The robotics competition will be held at Adelphi University campus on Saturday, April 20, 2013 and Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Each institution can participate with up to two high school and middle school teams. Volunteer professionals and Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Students are mentoring the students in the robotic competition and support services for the competition. The competition challenge and rules will be released and announced simultaneously to all participants at a Q&A session at Adelphi on February 16, 2013. An information packet will also be emailed to all registered participants.

Eight school districts already participated in a teacher training to develop robotics teams in their districts. Some of the topics the students will learn and improve upon are:

  • Design, construct and program robots using the LEGO Robotics kit
  • Apply foundational math, science and engineering concepts
  • Solve real-world problems and devise practical solutions in a project-based learning context
  • Develop their critical thinking, team-building and communication skills
  • Participate in intellectually stimulating and challenging program and competition
  • Plan and use challenging software and hardware
