This past year was another successful year for CSTEP! There
were many outstanding accomplishments for CSTEP scholars.
Students participated in faculty-mentored research projects
in chemistry, computer science, criminal justice, psychology,
social work and speech-language pathology, and they showcased
their work at the Undergraduate Research Day at Iona College.
Some students had the opportunity to present their research
at professional conferences, such as the American Chemical
Society (ACS) Undergraduate Research Symposium, The New York
State Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NYSSLHA) Convention
and the Annual CSTEP Statewide Conference. Some of our stellar
CSTEP students served as instructors for the STEP Program
Summer Academy. CSTEP students were invited to University
Heights High School in the Bronx for their College Preparedness
Event, where students advised high school juniors and seniors
on transitioning from high school to college. Our C/STEP Female
Leadership Conference was a great success. Among the many
professionals who led workshops on “Finding Power in
your Passion”, upperclassmen conducted workshops as
well. Students’ workshops were as follows: “Tips
to Strive for Success”, “The Early Bird Catches
the Worm: How to Attain your Goals Proactively and Effectively”
and “Grabbing Leadership by the Horns: How to Find,
Gain, and Keep Leadership Opportunities While Attending College.”
There were many more organized events during this past year.
I am very pleased with students’ persistence, motivation
and dedication.
So far, we have three very exciting events for Fall 2013.
The first is the Tour for Diversity in Medicine Conference
on September 24th. The tour brings medical students, physicians
and dentists to campus to speak with our students about the
medical school application process, the MCAT exam, test taking
skills and interviewing skills, to name a few. Albert Einstein
College of Medicine’s Diversity Open House is scheduled
for Sunday, October 27th for students interested in MD, PhD
and MD/PhD programs. Yale University’s School of Management,
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Law School and Medical
School will host Iona CSTEP students for an information session
on November 11th. As you can see, we are very busy this Fall
semester, and I look forward to seeing all of you at these
events.
I want to thank all of you for your participation and making
this program so special. I also want to thank our CSTEP Assistant,
Shanice Brown, for putting this collage together. I encourage
students to take advantage of all that CSTEP has to offer.
CSTEP is here to provide you with academic guidance, professional
development and networking opportunities to succeed in your
chosen field!.
