At the end of her senior year, she was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Polytechnic Sigma Xi Chapter. During her veterinarian education, Melissa participated in a volunteer program (VIDA) in Nicaragua and Honduras. She says that it was a great experience because she was able to teach people about animal care and to provide free medical attention and castration for their pets.
